Busy life "on the dock under the boat" in Phuoc Tinh

  04/07/2019

City center Vung Tau is just over 10km away, running through Cua Lap bridge which is the Phuoc Tinh fishing village. Like Phuoc Hai fishing village, Phuoc Tinh fishing village has a life of more than 300 years. For that reason, when coming to this ancient village, nothing is more interesting than discovering the ruins of the village, listening to the old fishermen.

Early in the morning, Phuoc Tinh fishing village rehearsed large boats, small boats, baskets of boats to dock to fish and shrimp. When the boat docked, women were waiting on the shore to support men to transport seafood to shore. Any ink, shrimp, crabs, crabs and so on, people pass their hands to shore. At this time, the trucks came to "eat" in and out of the port like a shuttle. Fisherman Huynh Van Dao, Phuoc Loc hamlet could not hide their pride when talking about the most prosperous fishing village not only in BR-VT. "90% of fishing villages live by sea fishing, offshore fishing, fishing gear, ship building. Although they work hard but every trip back and forth, fish and shrimp are full of boats and ships, we are happy and attached to more jobs, ”said Mr. Huynh Van Dao.

Phuoc Tinh is one of the largest and richest fishing villages among the fishing villages in Southern Vietnam. The number of boats is always over 1,000, of which 966 boats are offshore. Annual output of Phuoc Tinh reaches about 80,000 tons of seafood. The statistics of Phuoc Tinh Commune People's Committee also once again affirms that the income of people here is far higher than other localities with 2,500 USD / year.

Not only catching fish, Phuoc Tinh also enriches from shipbuilding. Phuoc Tinh has 5 docking stations, attracting hundreds of skilled workers and many local workers to work. Every year, Phuoc Tinh ships more than 40 offshore fishing boats. In addition to the ability to build new ships, Phuoc Tinh is also a very prestigious place in repairing and overhauling ships. Many ship owners in remote provinces like Quang Ngai, Phu Yen and Kien Giang ... often bring ships here to repair.

According to the old history, Dai Nam Nhat book stated that Phuoc Tinh was a fishing village formed very early, located in the east of Cua Lap, convenient for boats to fish in and out. Before the 18th year of Minh Mang (1837), Phuoc Tinh was named Gieng Bung village (Nguyen Cua Lap was called hai ton Gieng Bung). The tradition of circulating in the process of fighting with the Tay Son army, Nguyen Anh had dug in the east of Cua Lap a well, circumference about 10 meters deep, 12 meters deep, very sweet water. Local people called wells or "wells". Since the beginning of the 19th century, Phuoc Tinh has been a prosperous commune of An Phu Thuong (Phuoc An district is now only 6 communes). Documents of the French said in 1900, Phuoc Tinh had 1,628 people. In 1970, Phuoc Tinh had 11,527 people.

Through many ups and downs of history, the sea village of Phuoc Tinh has constantly developed and marked the increasing crowds of long-standing families, with a tradition of sticking to the sea. The book of Dai Nam was also recorded that: From the time of Gia Long (1802-1820), people built the Ky Phong Forum in Phuoc Tinh to worship the sea spirits. Ky Phong herd in Phuoc Tinh commune was built during the Gia Long period, worshiping the sea gods, including Dien Mau, Long Nu and Dien Ba, annually in the early spring and autumn. The fishermen in Phuoc Tinh said that, until now, the people of the fishing village still keep in mind that "there is still strength to go to the sea".

So for more than 300 years, the rhythm of life in this sea village has never stopped. Every time the fishermen finish a fishing expedition offshore with long nights facing the wind and waves to find the "sea fortune", at the fishing grounds, from the morning dawn, the women have hustle to welcome her husband and children back. Traders specializing in collecting seafood also gather here very early with the purpose of buying fresh batches of shrimp, crabs and fish to be sold to all over the city.
